Default Basic Hunter Questions - Which Tree/Build?

I've read various forums without really getting the answer to my question
to click, and prefer ng over other options, so here I am. Any help is
appreciated.

I'm playing a hunter now for the first time, and need a little
clarification. Playing strictly PvE, putting the first group of points
into Marksmanship. Like to play solo when necessary, enjoy group when
necessary.

I don't know which way to go now -- Beast Mastery or Survival. Learning
a bit toward Survival but am holding off till i understand it better.
Any suggestions? An approach that's worked for you?

Secondly, I want a good tank on the basis that I want to do a lot of
damage with my Marksmanship as long as possible, so i want the pet to
take the blows for a while. Sound approach? Any suggestions? Horde or
Alliance, I'm playing one of each, lol.

Thanks so much!

For PvE solo play, I took the path of Beast mastery/Marksmanship. With the
new pet abilties just give your pet the armor and stamina and let the pet do
the tanking. The down time is a lot less for leveling. When you reach or
approach level 60 just redo talents if you plan to group for dungeons, and
concentrate on Marksmanship/Survival for the added ranged DPS. Most times
you won't be using a pet in the higher level instances and will be counted
on for the ranged damage. It doesn't hurt to start building a Stamina based
armor set once you hit level 50 either, as your survivability in instances
increases with the extra HP's, allowing you to apply a continuous stream of
ranged damage without tapping out the healers, which helps to keep the MT
alive.

From what I understand of hunters (and that's not much, but I like
to hear myself talking):
Markmanship = Ranged damage
Survival = Melee fighting
Beast Mastery = Pet improvements (more damage, better damage mitigation)

So if you want to kill the baddies with ranged weapons while your pet
is doing the tanking (give it a /hug every now and then, it deserves
it), I guess MM/BM is the best thing.

Chris, druids are their own pets

For PvE levelling: BM all the way, no questions asked. Grab yourself a bear
and train it up in the best AC and stamina you can put on it. I use a 34 BM
build with the change going into MM and a group would just slow me down. I
can solo elites my own level (52) and level 58 non elite mobs are a
pushover.
