That's because the people who pass because that's what the custom is aren't given a chance to change their minds when they notice someone selecting greed (and will think that person is a ninja). If everyone just followed the same rules as BOE there'd be little problem. However, there are a few minor advantages to this rule. First, it gives groups a chance to negotiate over the disposition of the item. Someone can offer to buy the item, or disenchant it first and roll on the materials, or discuss whether it really is needed for a character or not, etc. This isn't needed for BOE. One useful part of this rule is when there are enchanters around who can disenchant and then the group rolls on the materials. Basically the rule gives groups time to discuss how to dispose of the item; whereas BOE items can always be negotiated over later. It would be interesting if BOP items obtained while in a group didn't become soulbound until you left the dungeon or group. They could be freely traded until then. (but quest rewards should always be soulbound, imo) -- Darin Johnson |

I believe BoP items have a three-minute timer on the roll-for-loot window, don't they? That should be sufficient time for everybody to discuss what's up. I don't automatically pass on BoP's because I've been screwed outta them sometimes by somebody who chooses 'greed' just to vendor/DE it. But, I never hit the need button until I've discussed with the group why I'm going to and see a consensus, if they have a better reason I shouldn't (hasn't happened yet), then I'll pass. Or, if it's going to be a more significant upgrade to another in the party, I'll often pass just because I know what it's like - being a green-geared rogue and getting beat on a shadowcraft piece by a rogue who already has 5pcs and blues in other slots...in ramparts/furnace (was in one group that did both back-to-back), I passed on two nice leather items to another rogue in the group, simply because I saw he had pre-TBC greens compared to me having pre-TBC epics in those slots... |
